Creative Travel Supplies for Drawing, Painting & Journaling

I’m a creative traveler, so besides the essentials, I always bring things that help me be creative on the road. I find it really important, and fun, to take time to fully absorb a place, whether that’s through drawing, painting, or journaling.

Below you'll find all the items with explanations on why I bring them. Prefer a simple overview without the details? Download the complete checklist as a PDF

Overview of Supplies

Notebooks & Paper

  • Dingbats notebook
I use a Dingbats notebook because it’s the best I’ve ever had. The pages are thick enough to write and paint on without bleed-through, and the bullet grid provides a nice, subtle guideline without being intrusive. The notebooks come in various colors, and with every purchase, part of the proceeds goes back to nature, which I love.

  • 2x Hanemühle sketchbooks
I also bring two Hanemühle sketchbooks: one where I create collages of the places I visit on one side and draw on the other, and a second one where I allow myself to make more mistakes and freely sketch whatever I want.

Drawing & Writing Tools

  • Faber-Castell colored pencils (mostly bright colors)
I bring mostly bright Faber-Castell colored pencils since I use earthy tones in my paints.

  • White Posca paint marker

  • Staedtler fineliners (0.05 to 0.8 mm)

  • 2 regular pencils

  • 1 mechanical pencil

  • 3 blue gel pens

Painting Supplies

  • Winsor & Newton watercolor half pans
For painting, I use Winsor & Newton watercolor half pans, which I keep neatly arranged in a metal palette I bought on Amazon, with the pans taped in place. I chose colors that I use most frequently, covering both warm and cool tones: Chinese White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Rose Madder Genuine, Cadmium Red, Gold Ochre, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Manganese Blue Hue, Cerulean Blue, Payne’s Gray, French Ultramarine, Green Gold, Winsor Green, Hooker’s Green.

  • Normal metal paint palette (with pans fixed by double-sided tape)

  • 3 Raphael brushes (small, medium, large)

  • Mini water spray bottle
A mini water spray bottle helps me keep my brushes moist when I want to paint quickly without carrying a full water container.

Other Tools & Accessories

  • 20 cm ruler

  • Clip (to hold paper in sketchbook)

  • Mobile phone holder

  • Pencil sharpener

  • Eraser

  • Mini travel scissors

  • Pencil case (to keep everything organized)
